Backflow testing in Los Angeles

Backflow testing confirms that the assembly protecting your water supply still works. It is required on a schedule where your water supplier says it is, and a failed or missing test can lead to service shutoff.

What LADWP requires

Starting July 1, 2025, LADWP applies updated cross-connection requirements to commercial and residential fire sprinkler systems, which can mean mandatory assemblies or retrofits. LADWP can disconnect water service if a required assembly is not installed, tested and maintained. Contact the program team to confirm whether your assembly is approved.

Old buildings, new rules

Downtown Los Angeles, the Fashion District and the Arts District mix 1920s-era warehouses, converted lofts and new towers. Older buildings are worth re-checking when rules change, because an assembly installed years ago may no longer meet the current requirement.

What a test visit covers

We test the assembly, record the result, repair or replace parts if it fails, retest, and give you a copy of the report for your supplier. If a new assembly is needed, we explain the options before you spend money.

Signs it is time to call

  • A notice from your water supplier about testing
  • A building with a fire sprinkler system built before the 2025 changes
  • An assembly that leaks or discharges
  • A remodel or change of use
  • No record of when an assembly was last tested

What happens when you call

  1. We confirm the address, the assembly and what your supplier asked for.
  2. We test the assembly and record the result.
  3. We repair if needed, retest and give you the report.
